Materials for sale

In 2006, I was signed up by Whiting Farms as a member of their Fly Tying Pro Team.  This enables me to obtain top quality feathers and materials both for use in my patterns and on occasion to offer for sale.

Fishing Class does not aim to provide a full range of tying materials.  Instead, we offer small amounts of top quality product that you may not see elsewhere, whenever they become available.  Our list will change regularly so please keep coming back to check what we have.

Please be aware that dry fly hackle is likely to be in short supply for the forseable furture. Bird flu, import restrictions, and rising feed and oil prices have meant that American breeders are not able to keep large flocks on the off chance they will sell. Instead birds are being pre-ordered.  I do not expect to be able to obtain any more dry fly capes before September 2010. Instead, look at buying some Whiting 100s which are the same top quality, pre-graded and sorted for your convenience.

Please check out the "Special Offers" page for one-off bargains.

I offer a 10% discount to bona fide members of the Fly Dressers Guild. Just quote your membership number with your order.

I also offer the same 10% discount to members of the Salmon and Trout Association.

Free postage on all orders over £20.00.

Please contact me via phone or email if you’d like to order any of the materials shown below.

Bleached and Dyed Peacock Herl (in stock)

This is a wonderful material for making compact bodies on small nymphs, spiders, wet and dry flies. Less strong than the larger peacock herl, it is still easy to use and unusually retains its iridescence despite the bleaching and dying process. Sold in:

Pack of three feathers of one colour

£2.00

Sampler pack of one each of six colours

 £3.00

Colours: Olive Green; Golden Olive; Red; Light Brown; Black; Emerald Green

Seal's Fur (in stock, dyed to order)

There is nothing quite like seal's fur for dubbing bodies. It has translucence, movement and once understood is easy to work with.  Good seal's fur is often difficult to obtain.  Sold in:

1 gram bags

£1.25

Colours:  Red; Claret; Green Highlander; Yellow; Fluoro Yellow; Gold; Hot Orange; Light Olive; Dark Olive; Fluoro Green; Teal Blue; Dark Blue; Purple or blends of the above

DNA Frosty Fish Fiber (in stock)

DNA's Frosty Fish Fiber is the ultimate fly tying material for the creation of baitfish imitations. This translucent helical fibre changes in depth of tone from a deep virtually radiant hue that almost glows, to what appears to be a lighter shade of the same color with a frosty sheen, depending on how the light hits the material. This mimics the behavior of light playing on the skin of natural baitfish, simulating the changes of luster and color that take place naturally. The resulting artificial, tied using Frosty Fish Fiber, has an incredible life-like quality that effectively reflects the characteristic patina and tonal changes of the real thing.  Sold in:

DNA pack

Whiting Brahma Hen Capes (awaiting new shipment)

I regularly stock Whiting Brahma hen capes in both natural and dyed colours. These capes give a wonderful hackle for small nymphs and wet flies and can be used as wings for dry flies. Perfect for crunchers, in addition the shoulders have a mottled feather that closely resembles the grey partridge hackles used on spider patterns, etc.  Sold in:

Whole cape

Colours: Golden Straw; Natural Brown; Golden Brown; Pale Yellow; Golden Olive

Whiting 100 Genetic Hackle Packs - Natural Colours (in stock)

Why buy a full cape when you perhaps only tie a couple of dozen flies per year?  These packs have enough genetic feathers to tie at least 100 standard dry flies.  Natural and dyed colours available. Unfortunately due to the poor US$/£ exchange rate and rise in bird food prices, these capes have increased in price substantially over the past few months. You will however struggle to find them cheaper. Ready sized and sorted for hook sizes from 10 to 20.  Sold in:

Whiting 100 pack

£11.40

Colours: Grizzle; Brown; Golden Badger; Silver Badger

Sizes: 10-20

Whiting 100 Genetic Hackle Packs - Dyed Colours (limited stock)

Why buy a full cape when you perhaps only tie a couple of dozen flies per year?  These packs have enough genetic feathers to tie at least 100 standard dry flies.  Natural and dyed colours available. Madeira Metallic Tinsel (in stock)

Madeira are well known amongst the ladies who stitch and knit as suppliers of a wide variety of tinsels, silks and threads. I particularly like the metallic tinsels that come in a twisted thread in a variety of colours. They make great "sparkler" type flies and are an economic way to add a bit of flash to any fly, large or small. I use the blue for the sides and tail in Peter Cockwill's famous "Blue Flash Damsel". This material is easy to use and easy to store and has very little waste. Sold in:

Pack of 22 yards
(20 metres)

£1.25

Colours: White/Gold; Black/Gold; Silver; Pearl; Black; Dark Grey; Green;

Damsel Blue; Copper; Red; Grey/Green

Whiting Black Laced Hen Capes (limited stock)

This is a must for anyone who ties wet flies with a French partridge hackle or any large soft hackle wets. These feathers come from the "Seabright" chicken and are naturally brown or white with a black border. The neck cape has feathers suitable to tie sizes 16 upwards. The dying process has been carried out with care and the natural softness and sheen of these lovely feathers remains. The hackle stem is much softer and easier to use than that of a partridge or similar game bird, giving a neater smaller head. The basal fluff on these feathers also makes a good marabou substitute for smaller flies (see the "Lucky 7" in "Flies that catch trout")

Whole Cape

£12.50

Colours: Dark Olive; Orange; Red; Yellow; Fluoro Yellow Chartreuse; Fluoro Green Chartreuse; Blue

Whiting Black Laced Hen - Pack of 12 Matched Feathers (in stock)

If you don't tie large quantities of flies then why not buy just what you need? Twelve feathers selected for quality and size. Sizes 8 to 14, although occasionaly I may have larger or smaller feathers, please ask.

Pack of 12 matched feathers

£1.50

Colours: Dark Olive; Orange; Red; Yellow; Fluoro Yellow Chartreuse; Fluoro Green Chartreuse

Whiting Tiers' Variety Pack (in stock)

A cheap way to sample a large part of the Whiting range. This pack contains a large selection of part capes and saddles from both cock and hen birds. Includes natural and dyed colours. If you want mostly hen feathers or mostly large sizes, please ask. Mostly for larger fly patterns.  Sold in:

Variety Pack

£8.50

Assorted colours and capes. I cannot guarantee any specific colours

Madeira Neon Thread (in stock)

This thread equates to about a 3/0 thread but is much stronger. It comes in 400 metre spools in a range of neon fluorescent colours. I use it for saltwater and pike flies as it allows a large bright head to be built up without too much work.  Sold in:

400 metre spool

£4.00

Colours: Yellow; Green; Red; Orange; Pink
